Pet Classes These classes are to help handlers acquire the skills to train their dogs to be well behaved pets and companions. Puppy For puppies 9 weeks through 6 months. Instructional lectures are included. If divided, Puppy 1 is for younger puppies (9-16 weeks) and Puppy 2 is for older puppies. Class limit: 13. Beginning For dogs 5-6 months and older who have never had obedience training or who need a refresher course or want to participate just for the fun of it. Class limited to 15. Advanced Beginning For dogs that have successfully completed beginning class, this class concentrates on fun & motivation, communication & increasing basic skills & provides students & their dogs an opportunity to earn the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen award. Class limited to 15. Beyond Advanced Beginning For dogs that have passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Handlers must be able to control their dogs off-leash. Helps handlers improve skills/relationships with their dogs, hone obedience exercises. Weekly fun & games and introduction to canine sports (ie: competition & rally obedience, agility skills & tricks). Class Limit 15. Competitive Obedience Training Series These classes are designed to teach the handler & dog the skills necessary to enter the obedience show ring. The first three classes are for teams working to earn the novice obedience title. Each class is limited to 12 unless otherwise stated Fundamentals (formerly CD-1) Introductory for beginning dogs & dogs not yet ready for Skill Building to establish a minimum set of skills: sit, down, straight line heeling; attention & positioning; concepts of bonding & teamwork. Skill Building (formerly CD-2) Builds on Fundamentals & teaches various required moves in novice (turns, change of pace, stationary exercises, recall [front & finish] & stand for exam. Ring Ready (formerly CD-3/CD-4) For dog/handler teams who know all the individual moves but need practice in stringing them together; covers AKC rules, ring management & performance/warm-up strategies. Open Offered periodically; training to prepare the teams to pass an AKC, CKC or UKC open routine. Dogs must be able to retrieve. Utility Offered periodically; training to prepare the teams to pass an AKC or CKC utility routine. Dogs must be able to retrieve. Other Classes Offered periodically; check current class schedule to see which are offered. Beginning Clicker Training LOVING TO LEARN: BEGINNING CLICKER TRAINING: This class employs clickers (provided) and all positive methods to teach basic behaviors (e.g., come, sit, stay, watch, loose leash walking) as well as other useful, fun behaviors like doggie zen. The main goal of the class is to teach those new to dog training and/or new to clicker training, a fun, effective method for life-long training that encourages a "thinking" dog that loves to learn. Class Limit: 15. Rally Obedience For those who have successfully completed beginning and/or advanced beginning classes, this is a new form of competition that includes elements of both traditional obedience and agility. Rally obedience competition allows handlers to talk, praise and encourage their dogs a variety of ways. Rally is a non-regular obedience competition of both AKC and UKC. This is a full-price, "no coupon", class. Tracking For those interested in AKC tracking. Most suited to beginners through pre-TD dogs. Very limited class size. Some classes off-site. Problem Solving Limited class size, obedience competition-motivated handlers of all levels will receive help with individual and group instruction. Only for highly motivated competition trainers, this class is a full-price, "no coupon", class. One to One Limited to 8 students, obedience competition-motivated handlers of all levels will receive individual instruction from three instructors as well as work in group exercises each week. Only for highly motivated competition trainers, this class is a full-price, "no coupon", class. Beginning Agility For dogs 12 months or older who are reasonably well-controlled off leash, introduces the sport of agility & stresses the safe use of agility equipment/obstacles. Dog must have completed basic obedience & have minimum skill of sit, down, come/recall off leash & stay. Handler must be able to control the dog on a buckle collar with leash (no pinch, prong, chokers or haltie collars allowed). Outdoor Class limited to 12. Open Agility (No instructor) For dogs who have had classes in agility or compete in agility & want practice on agility equipment. A different course set-up will be provided each week for the dog/handler team to practice their skills; students will work independently & will have to share equipment/course. Students may pre-register or pay $5.00 per walk-in participation. Outdoor Class limited to 12. Kid's Class For children ages 9-16, any age dog. Basic obedience exercises & handling as well as pet care skills taught; instructor discretion may be used regarding child's ability to participate, particularly if the dog is so much larger/ stronger that the child is unable to control the dog. Class limited to 10. Conformation For dogs who will be showing in formal (AKC, CKC, UKC,...) conformation events in the effort to earn their championship. Emphasis on ring handling and how to present your dog to his/her best advantage. Good Manners For dogs who are not going to do formal obedience but want to continue classes and do something different. It takes the skills learned in Advanced Beginning and shows how they are useful in every day life. Games will be used as part of the training process. For dogs who have completed Advanced Beginning. Class limited to 15.
